5.1 Mobile Communication

In 2018, the total number of telephone users in China reached 1.75 billion (21.4% of the world), which is a net increase of 137 million and an increase of 8.5% from that of the previous year. The total number of mobile phone subscribers reached 1.57 billion (19.2% of the world), which is a net increase of 149 million, and the penetration rate of mobile phone subscribers reached 112.2 per 100 people, an increase of 10.2 per 100 people over that of the previous year. The total number of mobile broadband subscribers (i.e., 4G and 3G subscribers) reached 1.31 billion (24.8% globally), accounting for 83.4% of mobile phone subscribers, a net increase of 174 million over the entire year. The total number of 4G users reached 1.17 billion, with a net increase of 169 million over the entire year (citing data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology).
